I visited the Broadkill Resort as part of a writing workshop sponsored by the owners (called "DogCon") and loved the place. It appears humble from the outside, but I was amazed by how comfortable the house was, while offering all you'll need for a homey and relaxing beachside getaway. Whether for one person, a couple (or pair or couples) or a small group, the house offers flexible accommodations with (I think it was four) separate bedrooms and two floors with a single bathroom on each. The kitchen is a highlight, and encourages community with an island, a bar and an attached dining area. Perfect for a small group retreat, or an editorial meeting, as well as just writers wanting a reprieve to focus. Look over their website and be sure to examine the photos to get a mental picture of what's in store. It's a simple house, but well kept and a thinker's paradise. There are books on shelves everywhere, comfy chairs in common areas, and all the basics for resting in bed. Outdoors you'll find a free community "little library" on the curb, which is a sign of just how literary this place is meant to be. There are quirky things here and there -- squid motifs in the artwork, an outdoor shower room (reminiscent of what they had in the TV show, MASH, only nicer), etc. The key feature, I think, is the panoptical room upstairs that gives you a 360-degree view of the surrounding area through windowglass -- like a eagle's nest atop the house -- where you can sit comfortably to write or scope out the beach (which is a block's walk away). The surrounding town of Milton has some really good restaurants and stores so you won't be too far from civilization (but you'll need to drive, I think, to get there -- and when you do, be sure to visit the DogFish Head Brewery!)... but it feels just isolated enough to truly be called a "getaway" because it is quiet and carefree, which is just what a writer if they’re ever seeking a place on the eastern seaboard to focus on their work. In fact, I think the place might inspire new ideas. I liked taking random breaks to go for a walk and get misted by the ocean at the Broadkill Beach (an area which is known for its horseshoe crabs and nearby bird sanctuary)... and if you're a bird watcher, I think you'll find plenty of sights to see!

Beautiful house next to a nature reserve with stunning views of marshlands and wildlife. Just a short walk away from the ocean, and a short drive away from shopping and restaurants. The house features a fireplace, back porch room, deck, and plenty of space for guests. Ideal for writers and artists who want a quiet place to create, or people who just want to get away.
